GENESIS
Lokshakti, meaning ‘People’s Power’, is a voluntary organization formed in 1984 by a group of people committed to working with the marginalized sections of the society, in inaccessible rural areas under the inspiring and charismatic leadership of Mr. Rabindra Kumar Ray, a son of the soil, hailing from Orissa with a distinguished history of involvement in the voluntary movement in India.
MISSION STATEMENT
To infuse power to the powerless and make the development process more democratic, relevant, attainable, acceptable and sustainable. Lokshakti considers development as a process of self-realization and awakening by which a community is enabled to identify the root cause of its problems, prioritize them and is capacitated to discover the ways and means to achieve its avowed goals.
HOW DOES LOKSHAKTI WORK?
With the overall objective of enhancing people’s power, Lokshakti promotes the process of conscientisastion social mobilization, leading to development of people’s own organizations. Empowerment’, being the central theme of this strategy, its role lies in preparing people through the process of praxis and pedagogy of the oppressed. The intervention model adopted by Lokshakti has been to make people aware of their socio-economic realities and developing capacities. The design is to make women and youth agents of social changes.
