Change often intensifies existing problems or creates new ones. Coping with these problems may seem difficult, and frequently requires counselling.

A key element of counselling is not giving advice on what to do, but being non-judgmental, accepting and helping the woman discover her strengths, weaknesses, and decide what she can and should do in the given circumstances. Confidentiality is another essential element in most of the centres.

Delhi has a variety of counselling facilities available for women, offering either group or individual sessions. They help women with matrimonial problems including dowry problems; violence; sexual, physical and mental abuse, career choices and changes related to them; sexual and other harassment at workplace: other problems of working women; problems with parents; premarital and extramarital problems; addiction; problems with interpersonal relationships; emotional instability; and so on,

Many counselling centres also act as crisis intervention centres, and provide referral services like medical, legal, etc. Some network with individual lawyers/law firms and provide legal counselling also.

Many hospitals and nursing homes have a social service unit which provides counselling service?

Many de-addiction centres also have a counselling units for the in-house patients as well as for others.

Counselling Centres also conduct:
  • Awareness programmes and workshops in communities and workplaces,
  • Help families/employees or individuals to arrive at a decision whether a particular individual's behaviour patterns or emotions are within the normal/optimum range or not.
