The decline 111 morbidity, reduction in birth rate and increase in life expectancy has resulted in a significant increase in the population of elderly people. Changes in values, workstyles and in the social order have weakened traditional family and community based support systems for the aged, and led to the growth of Homes for the Aged.

In India there are about 354 old age homes and out of these many provide free facilities and some function on a 'pay and stay' basis. These homes admit chronically ill elders and focus.on them for providing constant medical care.

The criteria for admission is that the elderly person should be 60 years and above.

Most of them provide a complete set for accommodation which includes room, kitchen and bathroom.

Besides accommodation facilities these homes also provide religious/recreational facilities like havan, kirtans, TV, Radio, and excursions to religious places, reading room etc.

Many of them have provision for medical checkups and some of them also have provision for physiotherapy.

Some organisations do not have accommodation facilities but have day care centres which also provide medical and recreational facilities. These organisations have networking with old age homes and help elderly people who are in need of an accommodation.

The homes and the day care centres also provide counselling to the elderly.
